Born This Way becomes 1000th #1 single on Hot 100

Lady Gaga makes history this week, as her new single "Born This Way" becomes the 1000th #1 single in Billboard's Hot 100 history. Gaga also breaks Britney Spears' recent record for the largest debut digital sales week by a female artist. Just a month ago, "Hold It Against Me" sold 411,000 copies, but "Born This Way" has sold 448,000 digital tracks in under a week. "Born This Way" was also the most-added song at CHR and Rhythmic radio, and debuts at #6 on the Hot 100 Radio Songs chart.

"Born This Way" is Gaga's third #1 single, following "Just Dance" and "Poker Face." It holds the record for the third-largest digital sales week, following Flo Rida's "Right Round" and the Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow." However, "Born This Way" debuted Friday and only had five days of availability, rather than a full week.
"It is a tremendous honor," Gaga told Billboard. "To be the 1000th no. 1 on Billboard...I would be silly not to say this is the greatest honor of my career."
"I am so humbled and so honored and overwhelmed by the reception to 'Born This Way,' " Gaga added. "[It] has been so life changing for me as an artist, and between Billboard and the international number ones and the radio numbers...I couldn't be more blessed to have the fans that I have."
In other Gaga news, she called into the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show this morning and discussed a number of topics, including her new album, Born This Way, which is due on May 23. She revealed that as a preview of the new record, "I'm gonna be releasing two to three songs right before the album comes out on iTunes."

As for the new single, "Born This Way," she explained that the song "is the marijuana to the heroin of the album. It is the gateway drug to the record." Gaga expanded on that by saying, "The record is intoxicating if you love Pop music, if you love catchy music, if you love my music and what I've done previously. 'Born This Way' is the most light song on the album. The record is quite eccentric. The influences range from the early '90s R&B music as well as Gospel music, to the next single, 'Judas,' being more Heavy Metal/Dance inspired. That record is much darker and much harder." She added that "Judas" is about "always being in love with the wrong man."

The singer also spoke about people comparing the song "Born This Way" to Madonna, explaining that, "I really love her, and she's just such an amazing person. I was really happy to hear from her and her staff about the record. There is no one that admires her more than me, and if anything, it's the spirit and legacy of Madonna that's gonna live on over the years. The spirit of the song 'Born This Way' is so much about freedom and being yourself, which is something that was so evident and important to her during her career. I'm flattered by the comparisons, but happy to know that she is cool."

Gaga also revealed her longtime love for Duran and his show, saying that she used to tape record the program every morning while she was getting ready for school so that if she missed anything, she could listen to it again later. The entire interview with Gaga can be streamed at www.ElvisDuran.com.
